Happily, I was wrong. At this point, I'm rooting for Doug Johnson to be the #2 QB behind Palmer instead of Anthony Wright. Wright eventually warmed up last night, but his first two possessions were disastrous. First series deep in Washington territory: (1) Pass in the flat for no gain. (2) Rudy tackled by 10 Redskins for an 8-yard loss. (3) Wright gets sacked, giving up so much yardage that they were out of FG range and had to punt. Um, where's Akili Smith or David Klingler when you need them?

One thing struck me while the talking heads reviewed all the ex-head coaches on Joe's staff in Washington. I think it's dangerous for a head coach to assume a CEO position on a team and relinquish a level of hands-on control that most head coaches have. I call it the "Bobby Bowden Syndrome". I about flipped out a couple of years ago when Florida State was going to the locker room at halftime and the on-field interviewer stuck a microphone in Bowden's face and asked him about a high-profile player that was injured in the first half. Incredibly, Bowden looked at the interviewer and asked, "Was he hurt? I didn't notice." Now, how far removed was Bowden that he totally missed the fact that one of his star players had not only been hurt, but that they stopped play, carted him off the field and sent in his backup? Where I work, we call that ROAD - "Retired on Active Duty".

I don't mean to imply that Gibbs has turned into Bowden. But, when you start delegating total control of the offense to one guy and total control of the defense to another guy, then exactly who or what is Gibbs coaching?

I suspect that the Redskins will be fine. Anthony Wright had to resort to a trick play to get the Bengals moving on them and Brunell didn't play very long. His first INT was likely the fault of the receiver going the wrong way, so I'd pull your head out of the oven. At least your quarterback has two knees...

I wish I could talk you down, but it looks bad for...

I wish I could talk you down, but it looks bad for the Redskins.
